Miravalles Volcano
Miravalles Volcano is located in the Guanacaste mountain range 21miles outside of Liberia in an east-southeast direction surrounded bybeautiful pale sand beaches. At the Guayabo-Fortuna crossroads, 600 meters above sea level, stands the imposing Miravalles Volcano which soars 2,026 meters high. This volcano stands 1969ft (600m) above sea level boasting a total height of 6654ft (2028m) and total area of 28,840 acres.
Due to its location, it interceps the cloud flow from the Caribbean, preventing rains from reaching the dry lands of Bagaces. Also the main crater is dormant, there is some terminal solfataric activity as evidenced by the mudpots on the southern flank. The area around the volcano, the Miravalles Forest Reserve, is home to cloud and moist forests filled with rivers, waterfalls, hot springs and innumerable plant and animal species. Costa Rica’s only geothermal power plant is at the foot of the Miravalles Volcano.
Poas Volcano
Poas Volcano, located in the National Park of the same name, is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. The volcano stands 8,884 feet high, and contains three craters. There are historical records of Poas volcano's action that go as far back as 1828 , but the last known eruption happened in 1996.
Poas Volcano is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. Water from the lake is constantly seeping through cracks in the hot rock, evaporating and building pockets of steam. While the water in the lake may seem inviting, it is extremely acidic and can be as hot as 185 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is definitely not for swimming. Explosions still occur regularly, and the activity like the steam, is often caused by the interaction of the lava with the water. Poas Volcano Lodge is a comfortable place to stay while you visit the volcano and the nearby Las Paz waterfalls, which is only 20 minutes away. It is located on the road between Poas and Vara Blancas.
Rincon de la Vieja
Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, also known as the "Colossus of Guanacaste" sits inside a 14,083 hectares national park with the same name, just 25km outside of Liberia, which is touristically speaking the most important city in our Guanacaste province. The Rincón de La Vieja presents diversities habitats due the differences in altitude and precipitation, the volcanic eruptive effect and the type of watershed.
The Rincón de La Vieja National Park is located in the mountain range of Guanacaste, province of Guanacaste and Alajuela, 27-km northeast of Liberia City. Rincon de la Vieja National Park contains diverse habitats, produced by the differences in altitude and rainfall, the effect of volcanic eruptions and the type of slope. In the lower regions, trees include the Guanacaste, freijo, gumbo-limbo, bitter cedar and capulin. The solid Rincón de La Vieja, of 1.916 Mts. of altitude, is a compose structure. In the top has been identifying nine eruptive points, one active and the others inactive in degradation process. To the south of the crater you can find a pure water lagoon.
Turrialba Volcano
Turrialba Volcano was named after the region of Costa Rica in which the volcano is situated.
Turrialba Volcano has been quiescent since a series of explosive eruptions in the 19th century that were sometimes accompanied by pyroclastic flows. Turrialba Volcano is one of the few volcanos in Costa Rica where the visitor can actually descend into one of the craters. Here you can find a mountain range and cloud forest, with ferns, bromeliads, lichens and mosses.
Turrialba Volcano National Park in Cartago and all the other National Parks in Costa Rica with its wildlife and rain forests. You'll find parks, reserves, protected areas, and wildlife refuges. A large portion of Turrialba Volcano National Park is made up of primary and secondary forest, which is where it is most common to view the smaller wildlife scurrying around. Hiking along the trails allows you to see the various lava flows that give evidence to the once flowing rivers of hot magma.
